I had a privilege to host the inaugural Base Batch 001 Africa edition in Nairobi
We kicked off with an introduction to Base — the secure, low-cost, builder-friendly Ethereum Layer 2 incubated by Coinbase built by Jesse Pollak and his talented team. Attendees got a glimpse into Base’s mission: to onboard the next billion users onchain.
We then dove into the Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP), walking everyone through setting up their accounts and Coinbase Wallets. It wasn’t just talk — participants were up and running within minutes, ready to deploy real applications. The hands-on focus helped demystify building with Base and gave builders immediate access to powerful tools.
Exploring Base Batches Tracks
Next, we unveiled the tracks available in the Base Batches program:
🧠 AI
💵 Stablecoins
🚀 Showcase
📱 Miniapps
Each track represents a key pillar of the growing Base ecosystem, and we made sure attendees could see how their ideas fit into this broader vision.
Building AI Agents with AgentKit
The first deep-dive session featured AI Agents. Using AgentKit — Base’s powerful toolkit for deploying autonomous onchain agents — builders created their first AI-enabled applications.
Through live demos and hands-on coding, attendees experienced how easy and powerful it is to leverage AgentKit to automate onchain actions and build next-gen experiences.
Miniapps: Shipping Onchain Apps with Minikit & OnchainKit
After a short break (and much-needed coffee!), we jumped into building Miniapps using MiniKit and OnchainKit with Nelly Njeri.
Participants followed a guided build, launching lightweight, performant apps that connect seamlessly to Base. By the end of the session, many had an idea how to build their first miniapp from scratch — a true showcase of how Base is reducing friction for onchain development.
In-Depth Dive: Stablecoins and Showcase Projects
Our final technical session spotlighted Stablecoins and Showcase projects.
We explored ElementPay and Onboard, real-world examples of stablecoin payment systems thriving on Base.
For the Showcase track, we highlighted mqrpay and the ever-popular trivia.base, showing how creative, consumer-facing applications are thriving in the Base ecosystem.
These sessions not only taught builders how to integrate stablecoin functionality and social apps, but also inspired them to imagine new use cases.
Team Formations, Trivia, and Rewards
Following team formations and a fun-filled round of trivia.base games, we wrapped the day with some friendly competition and lots of laughter. Winners collected their prizes in USDC — with community identity flowing through Farcaster handles — and we capped it all off with a delicious networking lunch.
